Setting Personal Development Goals for 2025: A Roadmap to Success
When we approach a new year, it’s the perfect time to think forward. Visualise where you want to be in your role or organisation in 12 months’ time. Let yourself think blue sky, think outside the box and explore ideas without limitations. Consider what you would like your role to look like in 12 months’ time. What would you like to be doing more of in terms of what you want to be doing and how you would like to be working? What would you like your team to look like in terms of structure but also in terms of behaviours?
Don’t leave it at the top level, consider the details and what it would feel like to achieve your goal, of working in that way.
We all know about SMART goals so here are some additional tips to help you with setting your goal:
Be Honest with Yourself About Your Goal
The first step in any goal-setting journey is to be truthful with yourself about what you really want to achieve. Ask yourself:
- Why does this goal matter to me?
- What impact will achieving this have on my life?
- Am I willing to commit the time and energy required?
By digging deep and aligning your goals with your values, you ensure they are meaningful and motivating.
Write It Down
Putting your goals in writing makes them tangible and real. Research shows that people who write down their goals are more likely to achieve them. Use a journal, planner, or digital tool to:
- Define your goals clearly.
- Break them into actionable steps.
- Track your progress.
Seeing your goals in black and white (or whichever colour you choose!) reinforces your commitment and helps you stay focused.
Share It
Accountability can be a powerful motivator. Share your goals with trusted friends, family, colleagues or a coach who will encourage and support you. By verbalising your intentions, you invite others to hold you accountable and celebrate your progress along the way.
Don’t Know Where to Start? Chunk It Down
Big goals can feel overwhelming, but breaking them into smaller, manageable steps makes them achievable. If you don’t know where to start:
- Identify the first small action you can take.
- Create milestones to measure your progress.
- Focus on one step at a time to build momentum.
For example, if your goal is to improve your team’s culture, brainstorm what it would look like in terms of key behaviours, values, communication and trust and for each aspect identify actions you can take to move you one step closer.
Give Yourself a Deadline
Setting a deadline creates a sense of urgency and helps you stay on track. Without a timeline, it’s easy to lose focus or procrastinate. Consider:
- Short-term deadlines for specific milestones.
- A clear final deadline to achieve your overall goal.
Deadlines create structure and allow you to monitor your progress effectively.
Consider These Key Questions
As you plan your goals, take time to reflect on these important considerations:
What habits or behaviours do you need to build or stop to support you?: Reflect on the daily habits that will help you succeed. Do you need to build consistency within those habits and behaviours that are moving you forward and stop those which are holding you back?
What Strengths will you use to get there? Identify and dial up the strengths you have that will help you to make progress. Tools like Strengthscope can help you uncover what naturally energises you and drives your success.
Are your weaknesses impacting your progress?: Recognise any weaknesses or energy drainers that may be holding you back. We all have weaknesses having an awareness of them allows you to plan which other strengths you have that may support you or who else within your team may have that strength you can borrow.
What challenges may you face?: Anticipate potential roadblocks and think of solutions in advance. Whether it’s time constraints or lack of resources, having a plan to address those challenges allows you to be proactive.
What resources are available to you?: Consider what tools, people, or knowledge you can use to help you to achieve your goal. Resources could include your line manager, stakeholders or your team members, they could also include books, courses, or online resources to help you to learn or stay organised.
Staying Motivated Throughout the Year
New year is a great time for motivation to be high but we all know it can wane over time, here are some ways to keep your energy high:
Use your strengths: Optimising your strengths in achieving your goal will intrinsically motivate you. You will be naturally more energised and motivated to move your goal forward.
Visualise Success: Go back to how we started, what it would look like when you achieved your goal, think about the details and even feel how it would feel to achieve it and what that would make reality look like.
Track Progress: Use apps, journals, or planners to monitor your journey. Seeing how far you’ve come will boost morale.
